JUMPING OUT OF THE BOAT

Taking the job, I promised myself I would give it six months. It is now seven…stretching to eternity.

The job pays well, the bosses are fair, the hours are reliable. And there I am. Utterly miserable. Taking the job, I promised myself I would give it six months. It is now seven…stretching to eternity. God did not wire me for endless data entry and ferreting through files which should have been thrown out twenty-five years ago. However, I keep showing up; the faithful employee thinking surely something will improve.

ROUND PEG IN SQUARE HOLE

God laughs. The job does not change for the better. I am depressed and exhausted from being depressed. God repeatedly reminds me I am that round peg who tries to force itself into the square hole. Do I listen to Him? My fears of unemployment outweigh trusting God.

A TEMPEST OF FEAR

A piece I wrote about stepping out of the boat amid the storm keeps going through my mind. I’m scared. What if the next job is worse than this one? What if I can’t find a job? How will we buy groceries? What if…what if…. what if????? A tempest of fear surrounds me.

GO OUT AND GET BUSY

After nights of sleepless anguish, I decide enough is enough. Will I take God at His Word, depend on Him, and trust that He has a place for this square peg? Do I have the courage to step out of the boat? Dale Carnegie said, “Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.” Thank you, Dale, for kicking my butt.

“Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall praise Him for the help of His presence” (Psalm 42:5).

THE JUMP

I jump out of the proverbial boat. For years my husband has been nudging me to get my certification as a substitute teacher. I have held back because of my fears of all the unknown: out of control kids in schools where I don’t comprehend the norms or the culture. Finally, I throw fear in the backseat and fill out the piles of paperwork and clearances to be certified. The paperwork is finalized.

On Wednesday I discard caution; tell my employer I am resigning. The deed is done. The following Wednesday I begin subbing.

THE HAPPY DUCK

After all the anguish, I leap out of the boat only to discover I transform into that happy duck riding the waves. God pointed out my sweet spot for subbing, even when I kept ignoring Him. Bravery is stepping out of the boat when God nudges. Inaction is staying glued in the boat.

Courage is becoming a substitute teacher.

OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN

Did you ever feel like you are living the movie Groundhog Day? You awake to discover you keep repeating the same failures over and over.

Did you ever feel like you are living the movie Groundhog Day? You awake to discover you keep repeating the same failures over and over. Every day is Groundhog Day again, and again, and again. In the movie, the main character comes the realization that he is doomed to spend the rest of eternity in the same place, seeing the same people do the same thing EVERY day.

NOTHING NEW ON EARTH

Our world is Groundhog Day in the flesh. The writer of Ecclesiastes accurately observes: What exists now is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done; there is nothing truly new on earth.

CREATION IS DOOMED

God’s lovely, perfect, incredible creation became doomed. Through Adam’s decision in the Garden, he walked away from the Creator God.  Sin rears its ugly head in every individual and generation since the Garden. There is nothing truly new on earth regarding our behavior as people.

A DIM MEMORY OF THE BEAUTY

We are but a dim memory of the beauty of who we were created to be. The sin process repeats over and over every day of our lives. Ecclesiastes says, “Is there anything about which someone can say, ‘Look at this! Is it new’? It was already done long ago, before our time.”

BAND-AIDS DON’T WORK

I keep trying the same and band-aids for my sin problem. Along with the vast majority of people, I have collective amnesia when I think that just trying harder to be “nice people” changes people internally. The band-aid solution is futile. People cannot permanently be changed without the Creator.

THE SOLUTION

God provides the solution to breaking the cycle. Jesus’ death and resurrection offer reconciliation with God and new lives. By handing every inch and scrap of one’s life over to Jesus, the Creator makes all things new.  Hope exists!  All He is asking is that we give up the reins and let Him lead.  Run to the Savior!  “Vanity of vanities! All [that is done without God’s guidance] is vanity [futile, meaningless—a wisp of smoke, a vapor that vanishes, merely chasing the wind].” (Ecclesiastes 1:2)

GENUINE HOPE!

There is hope! Scripture gives hope for a fresh beginning. Therefore if anyone is in Christ [that is, grafted in, joined to Him by faith in Him as Savior], he is a new creature [reborn and renewed by the Holy Spirit]; the old things [the previous moral and spiritual condition] have passed away. Behold, new things have come [because spiritual awakening brings a new life]. (II Corinthians 5:17) Tired from chasing failure over and over again? Join me; come to the Cycle-Breaker: Jesus Christ.

IS IT A WONDERFUL LIFE?

George’s darkness is totally understandable. It is easy to remember failures.

“It’s A Wonderful Life” is not the most theologically correct movie, but it is one of my favorites. George Pratt, the central character, is so distraught that he contemplates suicide as the only solution. He stands ready to jump off a bridge on Christmas Eve when he hears the voice of a gentle stranger. George tells the man that he wishes he had never been born. George is at the end of his rope.

For years, George had tried to do the right thing. He sacrificed his dreams of college and a future for the sake of taking care of his family. George takes over his father’s credit union and saves it from bankruptcy by donating all his savings to keep the business afloat. You gotta love George, he is steadfast. However, his archenemy gains the upper hand. Everything goes down the drain. The bank auditor makes an appearance on the day that they discover $8,000 is missing from the credit union. George is angry, crushed, and disillusioned. He only sees darkness. George finally cries out to God.

GEORGE’S WISH OF NEVER BEING BORN

The stranger on the bridge tells George his wish has been granted and that George has never been born. The movie then gives George a glimpse of all the lives he has tirelessly helped through the years. George also sees what would have happened if he had not entered their stories: the town would have gone down the drain. George influenced countless lives, but never sees it until he cries out to God.

IT IS EAST TO REMEMBER FAILURES

As I write this, it is almost New Years, one of my favorite holidays of the year. I always think about new beginnings, especially if it has been a difficult year. It is easy to remember the people I tried to help, but to no avail. I visualize all the situations in which I failed and plain messed up. George’s darkness is totally understandable. It is easy to remember failures.

TIME TO TURN THE PAGE

Maybe it is time to turn the page. This is a wonderful time to catch up on anything that needs to be confessed and make right with God and others. A great next step is getting a pen to start writing a list of people whose lives you have impacted for the God during 2024. Maybe you received no fanfare or plaudits for your actions, but you know you obeyed God, even when it was hard. If the list is miniscule, do you need to expand your list of those you serve?

WHAT IS YOUR GIFT?

How about making this your aim and attitude for 2025: God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another. Do you have the gift of speaking? Then speak as though God himself were speaking through you. Do you have the gift of helping others? Do it with all the strength and energy that God supplies. Then everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. All glory and power to him forever and ever! (I Peter 4:10-11)

IT CAN BE A WONDERFUL LIFE

Don’t be George, waiting to jump off the bridge. God has a unique purpose for you. It may not be what you had planned, but in God’s eyes it is important. Just make sure that everything you do will bring glory to God through Jesus Christ. It’s a wonderful life. Get off the bridge!
